Layher Scaffolding at Ephesus Ancient City: Safe Restoration Without Damaging Historical Fabric

Back to All Posts

Introduction

Restoration works in world heritage sites like Ephesus require a much more sensitive approach than a standard industrial project. In this project, the flexibility and safety offered by Layher Scaffolding systems were the most critical priority in protecting a symbolic structure like the Celsus Library.

Main challenges we faced on site:

  • No physical damage to historical stone surfaces
  • No drilling during anchoring (fixing) processes
  • Precise control of load distribution
  • Minimum impact on tourist flow
  • Completion in a short time with Layher Scaffolding speed

Critical Site Observation

Standard scaffolding solutions cannot be used in such sensitive structures. A self-supporting system that does not touch the structure is mandatory to protect the historical fabric.

Solution: Engineering-Oriented, Non-Contact Scaffolding System

In this project, we completely abandoned the classic approach and designed a special Layher Scaffolding configuration that would not harm the structure.

1. Non-Contact Installation Strategy

Without direct intervention to the historical building:

  • Free-standing Layher Scaffolding systems were utilized.
  • Loads were spread over a wide area and distributed to the ground.
  • Physical risks were zeroed by ensuring minimum contact with the structure.

2. Static Calculation and Load Distribution

In the Layher Scaffolding system, platform loads, wind effects, and human movements were calculated in detail. These calculations were made in full compliance with international engineering standards (ISO and EN norms).

Ground Protection

By using load distributing plates, point pressure was prevented and the thousands of years old ground of Ephesus was not damaged.

Modular Speed

Thanks to the modular structure of the Layher system, installation time was minimized and the work schedule was accelerated.

Site Experience: A Flawless Operation

The most critical point in this project was not only the installation, but the management of the entire process. Layher Scaffolding was installed, restoration teams worked at the highest safety standards, and the dismantling process was completed without a single scratch on the structure.

KRİTİK UYARI

Sense of Responsibility

Working in areas like Ephesus requires not only engineering but also a historical responsibility. Here, scaffolding is not just equipment, it is a protective shield.

Conclusion: Success in Numbers

  • 0% structural damage
  • 100% safe working environment
  • Error-free delivery within the planned time

A well-designed Layher Scaffolding system protects history, protects the team, and speeds up the process. It is often unnoticed but is the secret hero of restoration.
